VISIT TO PORTMEIRION

On the 29th September I went to portmeirion as part of my college trip to take images and references of buildings, pavements and anything that would help me with my 3d project that I am currently doing. As we reached portmeirion I could straight way see the building that where used in the show and how much inspiration was taken from there and how much had been edited in the show. While taking images of textures for my research I tried to get many as possible but mainly tried getting images of building and the walls that I could use on my own models. Visiting portmeirion was worth the journey as it would help me allot with my 3d course where I must recreate building from the prisoner, with the reference I can make my recreations similar and make my unique designs that still fit in with the prisoner theme.

When first stepped foot in portmeirion the first building I saw was the dome the same building used in the show but completely in a different place then the town in the show, many of the buildings in the town have inspired the producers of the show to create the style they have for the prisoner I can tell this as I was walking around portmeirion.

Overall the journey was good and portmeirion was worth going to as it has made it possible for me to have plenty research that will help me create my building and a section of the town.

Uses and Implementation of Direct3d and OpenGL

Uses and Implementation of Direct3d and OpenGL

Direct 3D is part of Microsoft’s direct x API and is only available for Microsoft various windows operating systems and in the open source software wine. Microsoft has also used direct 3D for the base of the Xbox and Xbox 360.

Direct3d is a 3d API that contains many commands for 3d rendering and since version 8 has taken responsibility for the rendering of 2d graphics. Microsoft updates direct3d continuously to try and keep up with the latest technology available on 3d graphics cards.

In 1992 Servan Keonjian started a company named RenderMorphics which made a 3d API called Reality Lab which went on to be used in medical imaging and cad software. Two versions of this API were released; Microsoft brought RenderMorphics in February 1995 bringing Keonjian on board to create a 3d graphics engine for windows 93 which was the first version to be shipped in direct x2.0 and 3.0.  Over the years Microsoft has released many version of there direct x from version 1.o to version 10 to 11 and 11 3D.
Direct3D's main competitor is OpenGL.
Open GL is a standard specification defining a cross language. Cross platform API for writing applications that produce 2d and 3d computer graphics. OpenGL was developed by silicon graphics in 1992 and is widely used in CAD, virtual reality, scientific visualization, information visualization and flight simulation and was also use din video games where it competes with direct3d on Microsoft windows platforms. OpenGL is managed by the non-profit technology consortium Khronos Group.

In the 1990s developing software that will be capable of functioning with a wide range of graphics hardware was a real challenge. Developers tried by writing custom interfaces and drivers for each hardware which was too expensive.
Both direct 3d and opengl have there uses for specific jobs where the direct3d is used more mainly for videos games and the opengl is used more in the professional graphics market but had entered into the gaming industry both software are used by developers to create the best product possible out of these two pieces of software and are will competing against each other to see who becomes the best.

visual research

Modernist in the prisoner

As part of our project we have to watch the TV show from 1967 the prisoner as part of this project I had to do some visual research of modernist that could be used as something from the prisoner or might have looked like it was inspired by the prisoner.

The prisoner was broadcasted in 1967 starring and co- created by Patrick McGoohan, the shoe combined of spy fiction and science fiction. The shows is a bout a British secret agent who is held prisoner in a mysterious seaside village where his captors must find out why he resigned from his job

While researching modernist images related to the prisoner. I came across two globe chairs that look like they might have been inspired by the globe chair used in the prisoner.

The images you can see above are examples of modern furniture that looks like furniture that was used in the prisoner, the images on the left are what I think might have been inspired by the image on the right from the prisoner.

While researching modernist images related to the prisoner, I came across a modern penny farthing bicycle that is similar to the one that has been used for the shows logo showing another example of modernist images related to the prisoner.

As you can see from the images above both images look similar suggesting that the image on the left may have been inspired by the image on the right.

Looking at modernist images related to the prisoner has made me realise over the years many shows and movies have used a lot of gadgets that where used in the prisoner like chairs coming out the ground. Doors open as you approach them, Statues with hidden comers and remote control helicopters and many more. By watching the prisoner you can realise how many shows and movies made now have come up with many ideas they use.

3d models

while researching i came across turbosquid a website for 3d models showing viewers what 3d modelling is used for i hope this is helpful

Wednesday, 15 September 2010

When asked what 3d is used for the first thing you might come up with is movies or gaming but not many people will know that 3d modelling has been used for things we will not even realise and might use daily. In the gaming industry 3d is known to be used to create the entire games and create in game animations from vehicles to objects around the area to the environments. Over the years 3d has improved and began to be used around the world for many reasons like military weapons, Medicine, wheatear systems, cars, houses and many more

In 1988 Allen Hastings and Stuart Ferguson created software called light wave 3d that has been used over the years for many movies and have become successful and one that have not for example like:

Avatar (2010)
Jurassic Park (1993)
300
Iron man
Titantic and many more
We where set to create a blog where we will be talking and going through week by week explaing what i have learned about 3d modelling techniques and research done for our project related the the tv show the prisoner created by Patrick Mcgoohan
